Partly. AI can show how a sofa, rug, or chair might look in a photo of your room, but it can't tell you whether the piece fits. House AI redesigns a photo in about 15 seconds, yet it does not measure your room, and furniture size in a render is not exact. Measure first, keep walkways 30 to 36 inches wide, and use the preview to judge style.
Fit is a numbers problem and style is a looks problem. A tape measure answers the first one. An AI preview helps with the second.

How to measure your room before you shop
Step 1: Measure every wall and the floor
Measure each wall from corner to corner in inches, then the full length and width of the floor. Sketch the room on paper and write each number on its wall.
Step 2: Mark what you can't move
Add doors and the way they swing, windows, radiators, vents, and outlets to the sketch. A sofa that blocks a vent or a door swing doesn't fit, even if the wall is long enough.
Step 3: Measure the way in
Measure the width of every doorway, hallway, and stair turn the furniture has to pass through.
Step 4: Compare product dimensions with your sketch
Before you buy, check the listed width, depth, and height of each piece against your numbers, and leave room for the clearances below.
Clearances and sizing rules to follow
Designers use a few simple rules for walkways, sofas, and rugs. Treat them as starting points, then adjust for doors and windows.
| What to check | Rule of thumb | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Walkway between large pieces | 30 to 36 inches, or at least 18 to 24 inches in a tight room | Emily Henderson |
| Sofa and the wall behind it | Pull the sofa 3 to 5 inches off the wall | Emily Henderson |
| Sofa length vs wall length | About two-thirds of the wall | Livingetc |
| Sofa length vs rug length | Sofa about two-thirds the length of the rug | Livingetc |
| Which legs sit on the rug | At least the front legs of the sofa and every chair | Emily Henderson |
| Rug edge to wall | About 24 inches in a large room, 10 to 18 inches in a smaller one | Emily Henderson |

Here is the two-thirds rule in practice. A 12-foot wall suits a sofa about 8 feet long, and an 8-foot sofa suits a rug about 12 feet long.

What an AI preview can and cannot tell you
An AI preview is good at style. In House AI you can upload a photo, pick from 300+ styles or describe the look in your own words, and see the room restyled. Furniture Replace swaps one piece and keeps the rest of the room, and the furniture in a design is matched to real products from 330 retailers. That shows you whether a curved sofa or a darker rug suits the room.

It can't tell you size. House AI does not measure your room, and the size of furniture in a render is not exact, so a sofa that looks right in the picture can still be too long for the wall. Small details can drift too. Use the render to choose the look, then check every product's dimensions against your tape measure.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI measure my room from a photo?
House AI can't. It redesigns the photo but does not measure the room, so treat any size you read off a render as a rough guess and measure with a tape.
How much space should I leave to walk around furniture?
Designer Emily Henderson recommends 30 to 36 inches between large pieces, or at least 18 to 24 inches when the room is small.
What size rug do I need for my sofa?
Pick a rug big enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and every chair sit on it. Livingetc suggests a sofa about two-thirds the length of the rug.
How long should my sofa be?
About two-thirds of the wall it sits against, according to the rule Livingetc reports from designers. On a 12-foot wall, that is a sofa about 8 feet long.
