A coffee table should be about two thirds the length of your sofa, so a 90-inch sofa pairs with a table around 60 inches long. Castlery's sizing guide puts the height 1.9 to 3.9 inches below the seat cushions, with 16 to 18 inches as the everyday height. Leave 14 to 18 inches between the table and the sofa.
Those three numbers, length, height, and gap, decide whether a coffee table looks right and is easy to use. Each rule below comes with its source.

Coffee table length: about two thirds of the sofa
Castlery's coffee table sizing guide, updated August 5, 2026, says to aim for a table around two thirds the length of your couch. Elissa Hall, lead designer at Red Awning, gives the same rule in Homes & Gardens (March 12, 2025), with a 90-inch sofa paired with a 60-inch table. Castlery's ranges by sofa size:
| Sofa length | Coffee table length |
|---|---|
| Under 71 inches (loveseat or compact 2-seater) | 35 to 47 inches |
| Around 79 inches (standard 3-seater) | 39 to 52 inches |
| Around 87 inches (large sofa or compact sectional) | 43 to 58 inches |
| 94 inches and above (oversized sectional) | 47 to 63 inches |
For width, Castlery pairs a standard sofa with a table 18 to 30 inches wide. Homes & Gardens quotes designer Victoria Darnell recommending a depth of 18 to 24 inches.

Coffee table height: at or just below the seat
A coffee table should sit level with the sofa seat or a little lower. Castlery puts it about 1.9 to 3.9 inches below the cushions and gives 16 to 18 inches as the everyday height, 10 to 14 inches for low-profile seating, and 18 to 22 inches if you eat or work at it. Sarah Montgomery tells Homes & Gardens the table should be at or just a few inches below your seat height.

How far a coffee table should be from the sofa
Leave about 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table, according to Castlery. That is close enough to reach a drink and far enough to walk past your knees. In a casual TV room, Sarah Montgomery suggests about 15 inches in Homes & Gardens. For the path around the table, Victoria Darnell recommends at least 18 inches.

How to check the size in your room
Step 1: Measure the sofa and the gap
Measure the sofa's full length, then multiply by two thirds for a target table length. Mark 14 to 18 inches out from the front of the seat.
Step 2: Tape the outline on the floor
Use painter's tape to outline the table at your target size and live with it for a day. Walk around it and sit down.
Step 3: Preview the shape in your room
Upload a photo of the room to House AI and use Furniture Replace to try a rectangular, round, or oval table. Each design takes about 15 seconds on average. AI doesn't measure your room, and small details can drift, so a render shows the shape and style, not the exact size. Your tape outline is the size check.
