How Can I Try Paint Colors Before Painting?

JBy Jeffrey Escobar4 min read

Test a paint color before you buy gallons: brush an 8 oz sample pot onto a board, or stick up a peel-and-stick swatch made with real paint. Leave it up for at least a day and check it in morning, midday, evening, and lamp light. House AI can preview a color on a photo of your room in about 15 seconds, but screen color is not paint color.

A paint chip is too small to judge, and a color on a screen is only an estimate. The methods below cost little or nothing and show you the color where it will live.

Benjamin Moore says its 8 oz sample covers about a 2 ft x 2 ft area in two coats. Its peel-and-stick sheet is about 0.92 square feet, so a sample pot shows more than four times as much color.

How to test paint colors before you commit

Step 1: Narrow it to two to four colors

Ringsend Interiors suggests testing two to four colors at a time, which is enough to compare undertones without losing track. Picking that shortlist is its own job, covered in our guide to choosing a paint color.

Step 2: Preview the shortlist on a photo of your room

Take a daylight photo of the room, open Wall Design in House AI, and describe the color you want in your own words. Each design takes about 15 seconds, and every user gets 3 free designs a day. Use it to judge mood and contrast with your floor and furniture. Screens and cameras shift color, AI doesn't measure the room, and small details can drift, so cross off colors here and confirm the rest with paint.

Step 3: Get real paint samples

Order peel-and-stick sheets, or brush a sample pot onto a white foam board. Ringsend recommends two coats and 24 hours of drying before you judge the color.

Step 4: Put the samples where it matters

Place each sample at eye level on two or three walls: one by the window, one in the darkest corner, and one beside the trim or cabinets it has to sit next to.

Step 5: Check them through the day

C2 Paint advises leaving samples up for at least one full day, ideally two. Look in the morning, at midday, in the evening, and again with the lamps on. Keep the color that looks right most of the time.

Frequently asked questions

Are peel-and-stick paint samples accurate?

They are closer than printed chips. Benjamin Moore says its sheets are painted with actual Benjamin Moore paint, but they come in one sheen, so test the final finish with a sample pot.

How long should I leave paint samples up?

At least one full day, ideally two, so you see the color in every kind of light, according to C2 Paint.

Is the paint color I see on my phone accurate?

No. Screens and cameras change color, so treat a preview as a way to compare options and judge mood, then make the final call with real paint on your wall.
