A full-service interior designer costs $8,550 on average in 2026, according to Angi, with most projects between $2,055 and $15,256. Online e-design packages run $199 to $1,099 per room at list price. Doing it yourself costs only the furniture. An AI app like House AI is free for 3 designs a day, or $39.99 a year.

Interior design prices vary so much because the word covers very different jobs. A designer managing a renovation and an app restyling one photo both count. This guide breaks the cost into the four ways people actually get a room designed, with prices checked on September 24, 2026.

How interior designers charge

Designers usually bill in one of four ways, and the method shapes your final bill. Angi's cost guide, updated August 31, 2026, lists these national ranges.

Fee modelTypical 2026 rangeWorks best for
Hourly$100 to $500 an hourAdvice on one or two rooms, or a quick consultation
Flat fee$2,000 to $12,000A defined project with a clear scope
Per square foot$5 to $17 per square footLarger homes and new builds
Percentage of project10% to 30% of the totalRenovations where the designer manages the budget

Ask which model a designer uses before the first meeting. A flat fee tells you the number up front. An hourly or percentage fee grows with the project, so a room that expands from new paint to new built-ins can cost far more than the first estimate.

Extras add up too. Angi lists initial consultations at $200 to $800, and mood boards and renderings at another $500 to $3,000. For a 200-square-foot living room at Angi's per-square-foot rates, the design fee alone would land between $1,000 and $3,400.

Why designer rates run so high

A designer's billing rate pays for much more than the designer's time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for interior designers at $67,190 a year, or $32.31 an hour, as of May 2025. The $100 to $500 an hour Angi reports is what firms charge clients, and it also has to cover the hours spent sourcing, ordering, tracking deliveries, and fixing problems that never show up on an invoice.

That is worth knowing when you compare quotes. A low hourly rate with a vague scope can end up costing more than a higher flat fee.

What online e-design costs

E-design services sit in the middle. You send photos and measurements, a designer sends back a concept and a shopping list, and nobody visits your home. Prices below come from each company's own pricing page on September 24, 2026.

Havenly lists its Online Full package at $199 and its In-Person package at $699, and both were half off with a promo code when we checked, at $99 and $349. Decorilla charges per room: Bronze is $599, Silver $859, and Gold $1,099, and a 15% fall discount brought them to $509, $730, and $934. Decorilla also takes 10% off when you book several rooms at once.

Per-room pricing is the catch. Three rooms at Decorilla's regular Bronze price come to $1,797, or $1,617.30 with the multi-room discount.

What a DIY room costs

Doing it yourself removes the design fee, and what is left is the furniture. Havenly publishes all-in room budgets, design fee plus furniture, based on more than 100,000 completed projects. They are a fair guide to what the furniture itself will run.

RoomAll-in cost range (Havenly, July 2026)
Living room$2,500 to $7,000
Bedroom$2,000 to $6,000
Dining room$1,800 to $5,500
Home office$1,500 to $4,500

The hidden cost of DIY is the mistakes. A sofa that is too deep for the wall, or a rug that is one size too small, can cost more to fix than a design fee would have. Seeing the room before you buy is how you avoid them.

What AI interior design costs

AI is the cheapest way to see a finished room. House AI gives every user 3 free designs a day. Beyond that, it costs $9.99 a week or $39.99 a year, and the yearly plan covers every room you photograph.

You upload one photo of your room, pick from 300+ styles, and get a redesign in about 15 seconds on average. The furniture in the design is matched to real products from 330 retailers, including Amazon, IKEA, West Elm, Wayfair, and Castlery, so the picture turns into a shopping list.

AI has limits. It does not measure your room, so a piece that looks right in the image may not fit the real wall. Small details can drift, like a lamp with no outlet nearby. And it will not manage a contractor, pull a permit, or catch a problem on site.

How to price your own project

Use these steps to find the right budget before you call anyone.

Step 1: Decide what is actually changing

Write down whether you are changing furniture and decor only, or also walls, floors, lighting, or built-ins. Anything that needs a contractor points toward a full-service designer.

Step 2: Test styles on a photo of your room

Upload a photo to House AI and try two or three styles. The free tier covers three designs a day, which is enough to settle on a direction before you spend anything.

Step 3: Price the furniture

Use the shopping list from your chosen design, or Havenly's room ranges above, to set a furniture budget. This is usually the largest number on the project.

Step 4: Choose the level of help you need

If you want a second opinion on layout for one room, an e-design package is enough. If walls are moving, get quotes from full-service designers and ask each one which fee model they use.

Step 5: Measure before you order

Measure the wall, the doorways, and the walkways, and check each product's dimensions against them. No design, from a person or an app, replaces a tape measure.

Which option fits your budget

Pick based on the size of the job, not only the price.

Your situationBest fitWhy
You do not know your style yetAI design appYou can see your own room in several styles for free before spending money

You are buying furniture and like to planDIY, with an AI app to previewYou skip the design fee and still see the room first

These options also stack. You can use an AI app to find the style, then pay a designer only for the part that needs a person. A picture of your own room in the style you want makes that first meeting shorter, and on an hourly fee, shorter is cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an interior designer cost for one room?

It depends on how the designer bills. Angi puts hourly rates at $100 to $500 in 2026, and online e-design services charge $199 to $1,099 per room at list price. A full-service project averages $8,550 nationally.

Is it cheaper to hire an interior designer or do it yourself?

Doing it yourself is cheaper up front because there is no design fee. It can cost more if you buy furniture that does not fit. Testing the room in an AI app first, and measuring before you order, helps you avoid that.

Do interior designers charge a percentage of the project?

Some do. Angi lists percentage fees at 10% to 30% of the total project cost. Because the fee is tied to the budget, it grows as the project grows.

How much does AI interior design cost?

House AI is free for 3 designs a day. Beyond that it costs $9.99 a week or $39.99 a year, and each design takes about 15 seconds.

Can AI replace an interior designer?

For choosing a style and seeing your room before you shop, AI is a fast, cheap option. It does not measure your room, manage contractors, or handle permits, so a renovation still needs a person.
