Most living rooms need an 8x10 or 9x12 rug. Pick the size that leaves 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls, reaches at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa, and lets the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on it. A 6x9 suits a living room of 11x13 feet or smaller.
The most common rug mistake is buying one that's too small, according to designer Emily Henderson. A small rug floats in the middle of the floor, and the furniture around it looks like it is drifting away.

Rug size by room size
| Rug size | Room it fits | Floor left around it |
|---|---|---|
| 6x9 | 11x13 feet or smaller | About 2 feet on each side |
| 8x10 | 11x13 feet or slightly larger | 12 to 18 inches in a defined living area |
| 9x12 | 12x18 feet or larger, or an open plan | Home Depot's guide calls it the common living room size |
| 10x14 | At least 11.5x15.5 feet | 18 to 36 inches to the walls |

Three layouts and the rug each one needs
Your furniture layout decides the size as much as the room does. There are three common ways to set a rug under a seating group.
- All legs on: every piece sits fully on the rug, about 8 inches in from the rug's edge, with 10 to 18 inches from rug to wall. This takes the biggest rug and works well in open plans.
- Front legs on: the rug runs under about a third of each piece's depth. This is the most forgiving layout in a standard living room.
- Floating: no legs touch the rug, and the gap between sofa and rug stays under 5 inches. This suits small rooms, with the rug under the coffee table.
Ruggable's rule is simple: get the front legs of the seating onto the rug, or size down so no legs touch it. A rug that catches the back legs of one chair and misses the rest looks like a mistake.

How to check the size before you buy
Step 1: Measure the sofa
The rug should reach at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa, and 8 is better. A 90-inch sofa needs a rug at least 102 inches wide, so an 8x10 with its 10-foot side along the sofa works.
Step 2: Tape the outline on the floor
Mark the rug's size with painter's tape and leave it down for a day. Walk around it and check the space to the walls.
Step 3: Keep the walkways open
Leave 30 to 36 inches between large pieces of furniture where you can, and at least 18 to 24 inches where the room is tight.

Step 4: See the room before you order
Upload a photo of the room to House AI and try a few styles to see how a large rug changes the look. Each design takes about 15 seconds, and every user gets 3 free designs a day. The picture isn't to scale, since AI doesn't measure your room and small details can drift, so buy by your tape numbers, not by the render.

Frequently asked questions
How much bigger than the sofa should a rug be?
At least 6 inches past the sofa on each side, and 8 inches is ideal, according to Emily Henderson.
Is a 5x7 rug too small for a living room?
In most living rooms, yes. Ruggable suggests a 5x7 only for a small living room, under a coffee table or in front of a fireplace with two chairs.
Should the sofa sit on the rug?
At least the front legs should. If the rug can't reach the front legs of every seat, size down so no legs touch it.
How far should a rug be from the wall?
Ruggable recommends a 12 to 18 inch border of floor around an 8x10 in a defined living area.
